PolyDADMAC (pDADMAC; CAS 26062-79-3) is a cationic quaternary ammonium polymer of 10^5 to 10^6 g/mol that drinking-water plants dose at 0.2 to 6 mg/L as 100 % polymer as a primary coagulant (Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, NHMRC). Certified products carry limits as product instead: 50 mg/L as product is the most common NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 maximum use level (NSF listings, 2026-10-21).
Poly DADMAC, or polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride, is sold as 10 to 60 % polymer solutions, so every dose needs its basis. It is one of the organic coagulants in this reference of water treatment chemicals.
Three controls frame a polyDADMAC program: the polymer-to-product conversion, residual DADMAC monomer (at most 2 % of the polymer and 0.2 mg/L in clarified water under ADWG) and NDMA formation where plants chloraminate.

What Is PolyDADMAC?#
PolyDADMAC is a cationic, high-charge-density polyelectrolyte built from diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) units that neutralizes the negative charge of particles in water. The monomer DADMAC has CAS 7398-69-8 and 161.67 g/mol (PubChem CID 33286).
Organic coagulants, such as polyDADMAC, epi-DMA polyamines and melamine resins, are cationic polymers of low to medium molecular weight and high charge density, used as a primary coagulant or an aid to reduce floc volume and sludge (NHMRC ADWG). DADMAC itself is not dosed: EPA's Water Treatment Chemical Supply Chain Profiles list it among precursors not used in water treatment.
Liquid, powder and "polyDADMAC 40": which forms are sold?#
"PolyDADMAC 40" is a trade label for a solution of about 40 % strength, inside the 10 to 60 % polymer range that ADWG gives. Usalco product data give 10 to 40 % solids and 10 to 18,000 cP, and solutions become hard to pump above 40 %. Buyers ask whether a strength is stated as % solids or % polymer. Powder grades follow the supplier's make-down procedure, as under polymer make-down and activation.
How Does PolyDADMAC Work as a Coagulant?#
PolyDADMAC works by charge neutralization and patch flocculation: its fixed positive charges adsorb on negative turbidity and humic substances and cancel their repulsion (NHMRC ADWG). Only cationic products serve as primary coagulants for the negatively charged solids of fresh water (Irish EPA coagulation manual).
Charge neutralization is very rapid, which makes rapid-mix design critical (Aqualab paper L2141). An overdose re-disperses the particles (NHMRC ADWG). Each step is compared under coagulation and flocculation in water treatment.
Is polyDADMAC a coagulant or a flocculant?#
PolyDADMAC is a coagulant: its medium molecular weight and high charge neutralize particles rather than bridge them. Polyacrylamide flocculants are typically 1 to 20 million g/mol (EN 1407:2023, EN 1410:2023). Polymer doses differ by role: 0.1 to 2 mg/L as a primary coagulant, 0.1 to 0.5 mg/L as an aid and below 0.1 mg/L as a flocculant or filter aid (Aqualab L2141). Bridging polymers are compared under flocculants for water treatment.
Where Is PolyDADMAC Used? Drinking Water, Membrane Pretreatment and Wastewater#
PolyDADMAC is used in 3 systems: drinking-water clarification and filtration, RO and UF pretreatment, and wastewater.
The table below compares role, dose basis, feed point and control by system.
| System | Role | Dose (basis) | Feed point | Control | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drinking water, primary coagulant | Charge neutralization | 0.2 to 6 mg/L (ppm) as 100 % polymer | Diluted, at rapid mix | Jar test, streaming current, turbidity | NHMRC ADWG |
| Drinking water, with a metal salt | Coagulant aid | 0.2 to 1 mg/L as 100 % polymer | Rapid mix | Jar test, turbidity | NHMRC ADWG |
| Direct and contact filtration | Primary coagulant or aid | Up to 10 mg/L as polymer where residual DADMAC stays at 2 % of polymer and 0.2 mg/L | Rapid mix ahead of filters | Filter effluent turbidity | NHMRC ADWG |
| RO and UF pretreatment | Turbidity, color and SDI reduction | Per NSF listing | Upstream of RO | SDI, turbidity, color | NSF listings |
| Municipal and industrial wastewater | Clarification, organics and phosphorus, food waste, filter aid; polymer programs beside sludge thickening and dewatering polymers and precipitation programs for heavy metal removal from wastewater | Set by jar test | Per process | Jar test | Usalco product page |
| Intake water, molluscicide | One pDADMAC product listed | 50 mg/L as product | Intake | Per listing | NSF molluscicide listings, 2026-10-21 |
Drinking water: primary coagulant, coagulant aid and direct filtration#
Drinking-water plants dose 0.2 to 6 mg/L (ppm) as 100 % polymer when polyDADMAC is the primary coagulant and 0.2 to 1 mg/L beside a metal salt (NHMRC ADWG). The diluted polymer is fed at the rapid mix and suits direct and contact filtration; direct filtration means coagulation and filtration without sedimentation (40 CFR 141.2). Coagulation sits beside disinfection among drinking water treatment chemicals.
PolyDADMAC is less useful than aluminum or iron salts for dilute inorganic suspensions and highly colored water (ADWG). Enhanced coagulation targets TOC removal under Step 1 and Step 2 of 40 CFR 141.135; see enhanced coagulation and TOC removal.
When can polyDADMAC replace a metal coagulant?#
PolyDADMAC replaces a metal coagulant mainly in turbid raw water: above 60 NTU a polymeric primary coagulant alone is normally sufficient (Veolia Water Handbook, chapter 5). The 3 turbidity conditions are listed below.
- Raw water below 10 NTU: a cationic polymer alone usually cannot clarify; an inorganic salt plus cationic polymer is used.
- Raw water of 10 to 60 NTU: an inorganic coagulant plus a cationic polymer is most effective.
- Raw water above 60 NTU: a polymeric primary coagulant alone is normally sufficient.
Polymer programs produce 50 to 90 % less sludge than inorganic coagulants, according to the same handbook. NTU units and filter limits are explained under turbidity in water.
RO and UF pretreatment#
Some NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 pDADMAC listings note use upstream of reverse osmosis to reduce turbidity, color and SDI. One seawater RO study reports polymer coagulant doses of 0.2 to 1 mg/L (Environmental Engineering Research, vol. 16). The DuPont FilmTec Reverse Osmosis Technical Manual prefers anionic or nonionic flocculants to cationic ones in membrane pretreatment, so coagulant choice belongs to RO pretreatment chemistry. The result is verified with the silt density index (SDI).
Municipal and industrial wastewater#
Wastewater plants use polyDADMAC for clarification, organics and phosphorus removal, food-processing waste and as a filter aid, with the dose set by jar test (supplier use list above). Phosphorus programs use aluminum, iron or lime, with or without polymer, confirmed by jar or pilot tests (Recommended Standards for Wastewater Facilities, 2014 edition); see chemical phosphorus removal from wastewater.
Choices by industry are compared under industrial wastewater treatment chemicals. One pDADMAC product also holds an NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 molluscicide listing at 50 mg/L as product (NSF listings, 2026-10-21), a use covered under macrofouling control.
How Is the PolyDADMAC Dose Calculated? As 100 % Polymer vs As Product#
The dose as product equals the dose as 100 % polymer divided by the polymer fraction: 1 mg/L as polymer is 2.5 mg/L as product at 40 % and 5 mg/L at 20 %. ADWG states doses as polymer while NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 states MULs as product, so 10 mg/L as polymer at 20 % already reaches the most common MUL of 50 mg/L as product.
The table below converts doses as polymer into doses as product at two example strengths (calculated).
| As 100 % polymer (mg/L) | As product at 40 % polymer (mg/L) | As product at 20 % polymer (mg/L) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.2 | 0.5 | 1 |
| 1 | 2.5 | 5 |
| 6 | 15 | 30 |
| 10 | 25 | 50 (the most common NSF MUL) |
Worked example: polyDADMAC feed rate at 10 MGD#
This worked example gives 41.7 lb/day (18.9 kg/d) of polymer and 104 lb/day (47.3 kg/d) of product for 10 MGD at 0.5 mg/L as polymer from a 40 % solution. It uses lb/day = mg/L x MGD x 8.34 / purity (Florida DEP) and kg/d = mg/L x m³/d / 1,000 (EOCP).
The table below lists every input and result.
| Input or result | Value |
|---|---|
| Flow | 10 MGD (37,854 m³/d) |
| Dose | 0.5 mg/L as 100 % polymer |
| Product strength | 40 % polymer (assumed example strength) |
| Polymer feed | 0.5 x 10 x 8.34 = 41.7 lb/day; 0.5 x 37,854 / 1,000 = 18.9 kg/d |
| Product feed | 41.7 / 0.40 = 104 lb/day (47.3 kg/d) |
| Dose as product | 0.5 / 0.40 = 1.25 mg/L as product |
A volume rate needs the product density from its SDS. Other flows run through the dosage and feed rate calculator.
How is polyDADMAC diluted and fed?#
PolyDADMAC is diluted and fed at the rapid mix, ahead of direct or contact filtration or the flocculation basin (NHMRC ADWG). Solutions become hard to pump above 40 % (Usalco), so viscous grades are pre-diluted, and powder follows the supplier's make-down. Pumps for viscous polymers are covered under chemical dosing pumps.
How Is PolyDADMAC Coagulation Controlled?#
Plants control polyDADMAC with 4 measurements from ADWG and the US filtration rule, listed below.
- Jar tests: set the starting dose and compare products on one basis.
- Streaming current: tracks the charge of coagulated water online.
- Settled and filtered turbidity: confirm particle removal at each stage.
- Combined filter effluent turbidity: at or below 0.3 NTU in at least 95 % of monthly measurements, never above 1 NTU (40 CFR 141.173).
How do jar tests and streaming current catch an overdose?#
An overdose shows as settled turbidity rising again at a higher dose, because excess cationic charge re-disperses the particles (NHMRC ADWG). Jar tests bracket the dose: 1 mL of a 1,000 mg/L stock in a 1 L jar equals 1 mg/L. Mixing speeds and readings are set out in the jar test procedure.
Most utilities run slightly negative zeta potential after coagulation, and a positive value indicates likely overfeed (Aqualab L2141). Salinity, conductivity and pH shifts influence streaming current, and sensor siting is the greatest challenge. Sensors are compared under streaming current and zeta potential.
What Is PolyDADMAC Compatible With?#
PolyDADMAC is compatible with metal salts and chlorine and incompatible with anionic chemistry in the same feed line. The 3 compatibility groups are listed below.
- Metal salts: combined at 0.2 to 1 mg/L as polymer as a coagulant aid (NHMRC ADWG).
- Oxidants: polyDADMAC solutions are chlorine resistant (supplier data).
- Anionic polymers and anionic chemistries: neutralize the polymer in the feed line (NHMRC ADWG).
Anionic antiscalant meeting a cationic polyelectrolyte or aluminum and iron forms a gum-like gel foulant, cleaned with repeated alkaline EDTA (DuPont FilmTec manual). Antiscalant suppliers are therefore asked about reactions with cationic polymers (Hydranautics TAB-111); see reverse osmosis and membrane chemicals.
Which Standards Cover PolyDADMAC? NSF/ANSI/CAN 60, AWWA B451 and EN 1408#
Three documents govern polyDADMAC: NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 for health effects, ANSI/AWWA B451-23 for product quality in North America and EN 1408:2023 in Europe. The table below compares them with two guideline instruments.
| Document | Scope | Edition / status | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|
| NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 | Health effects of drinking water treatment chemicals | Current edition | MUL product-specific, as product; required in 49 US states (NSF survey of ASDWA members) |
| ANSI/AWWA B451 | Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) | B451-23 | Revision covered 4.7 additive requirements, 4.8 impurities, 5.6 residual DADMAC determination |
| EN 1408 | Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride); one of the EN standards for drinking water treatment chemicals | EN 1408:2023 (CEN/TC 164/WG 9) | European product standard |
| NHMRC ADWG fact sheet | Treatment chemical guidance | Endorsed 1982 | Dose as polymer; DADMAC condition |
| Directive (EU) 2020/2184 | EU drinking water | Article 12 | Covers treatment chemicals and filter media |
What is the NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 maximum use level for polyDADMAC?#
No single NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 limit exists: MULs are product-specific and stated as product, most often 50 mg/L, then 25, 29 and 100 mg/L, within 1 to 250 mg/L (NSF listings, 2026-10-20). On 2026-10-21 the pDADMAC category held 148 companies, 1,785 products and 2,534 product-function rows, 782 of them at 50 mg/L. A separate pDMDAAC category (5 companies, 45 products) lists 25 mg/L most often.
The MUL is the total across all feed points, and certification lapses when a product is repackaged, diluted or blended at an uncertified site (NSF/ANSI/CAN 60-2020). That text gave a typical use level of 25 mg/L with at most 50 ppb DADMAC carried into water, a design value, not a MUL. Listing rules are explained under NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 certification.
What do ANSI/AWWA B451-23 and EN 1408 specify?#
ANSI/AWWA B451-23, like every AWWA B-standard, sets physical, chemical, sampling, testing, packaging and shipping requirements. Its revision rewrote section 4.7 on additives, 4.8 on impurities for wastewater use and 5.6 on residual DADMAC determination; comments closed on 2023-01-09. B452 sits beside it among AWWA B-series standards.
EN 1408:2023 is the European product standard, maintained by CEN/TC 164/WG 9; EU treatment chemicals fall under Article 12 of Directive (EU) 2020/2184.
What Is the Regulatory Status of PolyDADMAC in Drinking Water?#
PolyDADMAC has no numeric drinking-water limit in the US or the EU and is not listed in 21 CFR 173.310; control runs through certification, the monomer condition and NDMA guideline values (status 2026-10-20). The table below lists each instrument.
| Instrument | Value | Type | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| US, Safe Drinking Water Act | No MCL for DADMAC or polyDADMAC | No federal limit | 40 CFR 141 |
| EU, EU Drinking Water Directive 2020/2184 | No parametric value; treatment chemicals under Article 12 | Product rules | Directive (EU) 2020/2184 |
| ADWG, DADMAC | Doses up to 10 mg/L as polymer if DADMAC is at most 2 % of polymer and 0.2 mg/L in clarified water | Use condition | NHMRC |
| ADWG, NDMA | 0.0001 mg/L (100 ng/L) | Guideline value | NHMRC |
| WHO, NDMA (WHO guidelines for drinking-water quality) | 0.0001 mg/L | Guideline value | WHO GDWQ, Annex 3 |
| Health Canada, NDMA | 0.00004 mg/L (2010) | MAC | Health Canada summary table |
| 21 CFR 173.310 | Not listed | Boiler water additives | eCFR current to 2026-10-16 |
| EPA RMP and OSHA PSM | Not listed | Process safety | 40 CFR 68.130 |
| OSHA, NIOSH | See supplier SDS | Workplace | Supplier SDS |
Is there a limit for residual DADMAC monomer?#
No US or EU numeric limit for residual DADMAC exists, but two documents set conditions. ADWG allows doses up to 10 mg/L as polymer if DADMAC is at most 2 % of the polymer and 0.2 mg/L in clarified water (10 mg/L x 2 % = 0.2 mg/L). NSF/ANSI/CAN 60-2020 caps DADMAC carried into water at 50 ppb at its 25 mg/L typical use level, and B451-23 section 5.6 adds a determination method.
Does polyDADMAC form NDMA?#
Yes, polyDADMAC is an NDMA precursor under chloramination, though ranked below polyamines. NDMA forms from monochloramine and dimethylamine (WHO GDWQ), and ADWG lists polyelectrolytes as precursors. A 2009 study ranked formation potential polyamines above polyDADMAC (PubMed 19350904). Pre-ozonation raised polyDADMAC formation potential, so control means avoiding dichloramine-forming conditions and polymer exposure to ozone (PubMed 25112551). Pre-chlorination cut NDMA from most precursors by 10 to 50 %, except quaternary amine polymers (PubMed 25203542).
Guideline values are 100 ng/L (ADWG), 0.0001 mg/L (WHO) and 0.00004 mg/L (Health Canada, 2010). Air stripping, activated carbon and RO do not remove NDMA, while UV reaches below 0.005 µg/L (WHO). NDMA sits beside THMs and HAAs among disinfection byproducts.
How Should PolyDADMAC Be Handled and Stored?#
PolyDADMAC is stored in FRP, PE, PP, PVC, stainless steel or coated steel and kept apart from anionic polymers and anionic chemistries (NHMRC ADWG). Classification is product-specific, so each supplier SDS governs labels and protective equipment. Coagulants are not listed under EPA RMP (40 CFR 68.130) or OSHA PSM.
Solutions above 40 % are hard to pump, so lines and pumps are sized for the grade delivered. Containment is set out under chemical storage tanks.
The storage card below summarizes the handling data.
| Item | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Tank materials | FRP, PE, PP, PVC, stainless steel, coated steel | NHMRC ADWG |
| Incompatibles | Anionic polymers and anionic chemistries | NHMRC ADWG |
| Viscosity and pumping | 10 to 18,000 cP; hard to pump above 40 % | Supplier data |
| Classification | Product-specific; see supplier SDS | Supplier SDS |
| Process safety | Not listed under EPA RMP or OSHA PSM | 40 CFR 68.130 |
What does a polyDADMAC safety data sheet (SDS) cover?#
A polyDADMAC SDS covers one product, because classification, strength and transport data differ between products. The 4 checks below match an SDS to the plant.
- Confirm whether strength is given as % polymer or % solids.
- Check tank and piping materials against the ADWG list.
- Record the incompatibles, anionic polymers and chemistries first.
- Match the label's NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 MUL to the planned dose as product.
What Are the Alternatives to PolyDADMAC?#
The 5 main alternatives are polyamine, polyaluminum chloride, aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum sulfate and ferric chloride, with polyacrylamide as a flocculant partner. The table below compares them.
| Coagulant | CAS | Typical dose (basis) | Most common NSF MUL (as product, 2026-10-20) | AWWA | Monomer or residual rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PolyDADMAC | 26062-79-3 | 0.2 to 6 mg/L as 100 % polymer | 50, then 25 mg/L | B451-23 | ADWG: DADMAC at most 2 % of polymer, 0.2 mg/L |
| Polyamine (epi-DMA) | 25988-97-0 | Set by jar test | 10 mg/L | B452-20 | Epichlorohydrin 0.01 % dosed at 20 ppm (40 CFR 141.111); EU 0.10 µg/L |
| Polyaluminum chloride | 1327-41-9 | 5 to 100 mg/L as product (10 % Al2O3) | 250 mg/L | B408-25 | Listing condition: aluminum in finished water at most 2 mg/L |
| Aluminum chlorohydrate | 12042-91-0 | 3 to 100 mg/L as product (23 % Al2O3) | 250 mg/L | Supplied against B408 | Same aluminum listing condition |
| Aluminum sulfate (alum) | 10043-01-3 | 5 to 200 mg/L | 150 mg/L | B403-24 | Same aluminum listing condition |
| Ferric chloride | 7705-08-0 | 2 to 100 mg/L as FeCl3·6H2O | 250 mg/L | B407-24 | Iron SMCL 0.3 mg/L |
| Polyacrylamide (PAM) | 9003-05-8 | 0.05 to 0.3 mg/L as aid | 1 mg/L | B453-24 | Acrylamide 0.05 % dosed at 1 ppm (40 CFR 141.111) |
PolyDADMAC vs polyamine (epi-DMA)#
Both are cationic organic coagulants, but polyamine carries a lower most common MUL of 10 mg/L as product and a US monomer rule. Under 40 CFR 141.111, epichlorohydrin is held to 0.01 % residual monomer at a 20 ppm dose, with annual certification to the State; DADMAC has no federal equivalent. Polyamines also rank higher for NDMA formation potential (PubMed 19350904). That certification is detailed under polyamine (epi-DMA) coagulant.
PolyDADMAC vs PAC and ACH#
Aluminum salts are dosed at tens of mg/L as product, polyDADMAC at a few mg/L as polymer. For polyaluminum chloride (PAC) the range is 5 to 100 mg/L as product. The salts handle dilute inorganic suspensions and high color better, while the polymer produces less sludge. Some buyers exclude polymers: the City of Mansfield's 2023 ACH specification required "no organic polymers". The high-basicity product is covered under aluminum chlorohydrate (ACH).
PolyDADMAC Grades, Suppliers and Sourcing#
PolyDADMAC is supplied as liquid grades of 10 to 60 % polymer and as powder by six makers named in listings and product data, plus NSF-listed blenders. Producers by region are listed under water treatment chemical suppliers.
The table below lists these makers alphabetically.
| Company | Products named in sources | Note |
|---|---|---|
| AECI Water | PolyDADMAC grades | n/a |
| Buckman | Bufloc 5154 | NSF-listed |
| Kemira | PolyDADMAC grades | n/a |
| SNF | PolyDADMAC grades | n/a |
| Solenis | PolyDADMAC grades | n/a |
| Usalco | Poly-DADMAC | NSF MULs 25 to 100 mg/L |
Listed alphabetically; no company is a partner of this site and none pays for inclusion. Further NSF-listed trade names: Sudfloc EC40, Sudfloc TL and Abifloc 3070.
Each MUL belongs to one product and facility, so buyers check the exact trade name. Indian producers are grouped under water treatment chemical manufacturers in India.
How is polyDADMAC priced and quoted?#
PolyDADMAC is quoted per unit of solution, so offers compare only after conversion to cost per unit of 100 % polymer. Municipal liquid coagulants are bid per wet ton of solution (2,000 lb, 907 kg), firm and delivered, with a certificate of analysis, a notarized AWWA statement and the NSF certificate with MUL (City of Mansfield, 2023).
Public procurement records show what buyers paid at a given date and place; they include delivery and local terms and are not a current price. The City of Fargo, North Dakota, received 2 bids of USD 1.49 to 1.60 per pound for Poly DADMAC 20 in its 2025 WTP and RWRF chemical bid tabulation (published 2025).
Quote factors are strength and basis, form, package, annual quantity, freight distance, contract term and NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 certification, so send one specification and request quotes for water treatment chemicals on the same polymer basis.
Where Does PolyDADMAC Sit Among Coagulants for Water Treatment?#
PolyDADMAC belongs to the organic class, one of 4 coagulant classes beside inorganic metal salts, prehydrolyzed aluminum coagulants and natural coagulants. All four are compared under coagulants for water treatment. Its relatives, epi-DMA polyamines and melamine resins, are compared among organic coagulants.
PolyDADMAC FAQs#
How is polyDADMAC made?#
PolyDADMAC is polymerized from the monomer DADMAC (CAS 7398-69-8). Unreacted monomer is the residual that ADWG limits to 2 % of the polymer.
Is pDMDAAC the same as polyDADMAC?#
Yes, pDMDAAC, poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride), is a synonym of polyDADMAC. NSF lists it as a separate category, with 25 mg/L as product the most common MUL (NSF listings, 2026-10-21).
Does polyDADMAC work at any pH?#
PolyDADMAC is not pH sensitive and is chlorine resistant, according to supplier data.
Is polyDADMAC approved for boiler or food-plant steam?#
PolyDADMAC is not listed in 21 CFR 173.310 (eCFR current to 2026-10-16).
